Rhinoplasty, a procedure aimed at reshaping the nose, ranks among the most common plastic surgery interventions.
This surgery offers the possibility to either reduce or augment the nose’s size, alter the shape of the tip or bridge, narrow the nostril span, or adjust the angle between the nose and upper lip. Rhinoplasty can also address congenital defects, injuries, or improve breathing difficulties. Typically lasting one to two hours, more intricate cases may require additional time. The surgical process involves separating the skin from the bone and cartilaginous framework of the nose, which is then meticulously sculpted to achieve the desired shape. The specific form imparted depends on the individual’s concerns and the surgeon’s chosen technique. Ultimately, the skin is repositioned over the newly shaped structure.
Most plastic surgeons opt for an internal approach, making incisions within the nose. In more complex cases, some may choose an open technique, involving a small incision through the column, the vertical tissue that divides the nostrils. Post-surgery, a splint is applied to maintain the nose’s new shape. Nasal packs or soft plastic splints may also be placed inside the nostrils to stabilize the bridge, the partition wall between the respiratory passages.
